What happens once I have applied to UHY Hacker Young?

Every application is read and considered individually. We keep every applicant informed of what is happening. If we appear to be a good match for one another, you will be invited for an interview at the office of your choice.

In the largest office, London, the next stage is to invite you back again to meet more of your potential colleagues, to learn more about the firm and to be interviewed by a partner.

At the Manchester office, the interview procedure is a formal interview with our training manager which takes between 1 – 2 hours. From the initial interview candidates are selected to be interviewed by our training partner, followed by an informal discussion with one of our current students and then a short test reviewing a report for errors and omissions and writing a formal letter. The session takes approximately 3 hours.

Do you cater for deferred entry?

Because of the relatively small numbers involved, UHY Hacker Young does not tend to consider deferred entry.

Will late applications be considered?

Applications received after our closing date may be considered after the initial interviews are completed if we have not filled the vacancies with applicants selected for that process.

Can I apply for both the ACCA and ACA training programmes?

Yes – if the office you would like to train with offers both options, you can apply for both. We ask applicants to tell us their preference but applying for one route does not preclude you from the other and often we may advise an applicant that their skills are better suited to one study route over the other.

If I have a good degree grade but don’t meet the requisite UCAS points, can I still apply?

We use the UCAS points and degree requirements as a benchmark for our ‘ideal candidate’ but do sometimes make exceptions in certain cases (if, for example, a person has a strong relevant degree or even a Masters we may overlook a slight shortfall in UCAS points).

I am part qualified ACCA/ACA, can I still apply?

Yes, although it may be worth looking at the UHY group’s vacancies page first to make sure there are no other, more suitable positions or by simply calling the HR department to see if the firm is recruiting semi-seniors/part qualified staff at that time. It is also worth bearing in mind that someone who is already part way through their studies may find that areas of our training course covers subjects with which they are already familiar, and so it may not be the most appropriate path to take.

A good match? It’s just a job, isn’t it?

No; neither of us can afford to get it wrong. You have only one life, and we don’t recruit huge numbers of trainees, so we both have to be very sure that you want to become an accountant and that ours is the right environment for you.

What sort of person succeeds at UHY Hacker Young?

Someone with high standards, bags of energy and the ability to get on with anyone. You will need to stand on your own two feet, and you will be expected to take on responsibility early. You will also need to muck in when deadlines threaten, for example doing whatever is necessary to get some accounts finished, printed, bound and delivered.

Is it all work and no play?

No, but in the busiest periods it will feel that way. You have to appreciate that serving our clients is the firm’s top priority, and that you provide an important part of the service. Working and studying with friends certainly makes a tough life more enjoyable. And yes, we do unwind over a drink, and organise sports and social events!
