Why UHY Hacker Young?
I applied to the Birmingham office because I wanted to work for a firm that exposes you to a wide variety of different jobs and clients rather than just focusing on one area. I also wanted to work at a firm which hires like-minded graduates and provides a clear path to progress into more senior roles within your first couple of years working.
I have now been with the firm for 18 months and have found both the practical and theoretical experiences varied and engaging. I am really looking forward to the challenges that will arise in the next few years both in the day to day work and whilst studying towards my professional qualification.
What training is provided?
During my first few days, I attended a bookkeeping course as I had little prior accountancy experience. This helped me to then complete small bookkeeping tasks and VAT returns in order to build up my knowledge further. Progressively, I worked up to producing accounts for partnerships and sole traders before moving onto limited companies.
Since then, I have been exposed to a variety of different areas ranging from audits of academy schools and commercial companies, to consultancy management account roles in the public sector. Training and advice are always given by the firms experienced managers and partners. We are also given time to attend college to help work towards taking examinations for the professional qualification.
What does your job entail?
Due to the wide variety of our clients, I have worked in multiple different areas which has kept the work engaging and challenging. My time is currently filled with a consultancy role for a public sector client, completing VAT returns and management accounts for limited companies and auditing a wide range of organisations across different sectors.
I have found all these experiences to be beneficial to my studies as it has given me a wide base of knowledge to build on. I really enjoy the variety of work and responsibility we’re given at a junior level to provide a good service to our clients.
